You may have noticed that I’ve been in an airport every other weekend for the past few months traveling to various places in the U.S. While I love traveling, it can be tiring and take a toll on your health. I tend to make poorer eating choices while traveling (due to availability of healthy food, or just plain exhaustion) and sometimes get sick after traveling from the lack of self-care. When I travel every once in a while, that’s fine. But when I am traveling several times a month, it wears me down. Since I have been traveling so much, I have developed a few healthy lifestyle habits to keep me happy and healthy while traveling.
Don’t change your routine – Even though you’re flying, don’t change your health routine up too much. If you normally take a probiotic, pack your probiotics in a small bag to take in the mornings of your trip. I usually put collagen in my tea every morning so I bring these travel packs of collegen to put in my tea when I travel. If you take any other vitamins, bring them! Your body will thank you!
Pack snacks – The majority of airports I travel to don’t have a variety of healthy options available. I normally pack meals/snacks to eat at the airport. Some examples are larabars, RX bars, little packs of almonds, apples (don’t have to be refridgerated), rice cakes with peanut butter, etc. I normally bring a small meal to eat right before I get on the plane since I sometimes have severe motion sickness on planes, trains, and automobiles (basically anything that moves). I love going to Kale Me Crazy and getting their vegan wrap and then putting it in tupperware and bringing it to the airport.
Plan ahead – I always make the worst food choices when I don’t plan ahead and have to make a last minute decision about where to eat when I’m hangry (hello, fast food). I love to go on Yelp or Happy Cow (you can find both in the app store) before a trip and find the healthy options near a hotel where I can grab a smoothie for breakfast or a nice salad for lunch.
Hydrate – Drink LOTS of water. This is my biggest downfall and something I am constantly working on. Flying dries out your skin and also dehydrates your body. Normally my rule of thumb is to drink an entire 16 ox water bottle for every hour I’m in the air. I don’t always hit that goal but working towards it helps me drink more water.
Take Care of Your Skin – When I am traveling often, my skin becomes dry and I also have the tendency to break out more. When I travel, I like to use Pai Skincare products because they are gentle and also hydrating. My favorite product is Pai’s toner to spray on my face when it’s dry and needs a boost. It’s also extremely entertaining to spray it on your husband’s face when he’s not expecting it!
Do something active every day – When I’m traveling, I like to make sure I’m active every day. If I’m going to be walking around a city all day – that counts! But if I’m going to be laying out on the beach all day, I try to visit the hotel gym to get on the treadmill or elliptical for thirty minutes in the morning. Another one of my favorite things to do while traveling is to feel like a “local” in the city so I love trying a class at one of the local fitness studios.
