Fall is in the air and the change in temperature is the perfect time to think about layering to add interest and warmth to your outfit. Here are three layering tips to add interest while keeping a cohesive fall look:
Color
One of the easiest ways to layer is with the use of the color. Layering the same color but in different shades within the same family is an easy way to give you a polished and monochromatic look.
Another layering technique is to keep color intensity the same. If you are layering an outfit you can use different colors if they are complementary and the intensity is similar. Think of jewel tones, neutrals, or pastels. I especially gravitate toward mixing neutrals and softer colors but sometimes go with bolder and brighter colors. Here is an example of a monochromatic layering look:
Patterns
A fun way to spice up a layered look is to use patterns. I like graphic patterns but tend to use them in smaller pieces because they are extremely bold which is not really my style. If you fall in love with a strong graphic pattern you can tone it down with a solid. A solid layer adds interest and and the little extra warmth.
When layering different colored patterns I like to use a unifying color within each piece. If you have several patterns it’s best to make sure the patterns are in the different scale or size. If only using the same pattern you might look for pieces where the colors are inverted. Here is an example of an outfit layered with patterns:
Use of Texture
Fall textures are my go to to add interest to a layered look. I love the suedes, the corduroy, the bulky knitted cardigans and the leather to really up the interest level for fall. The trend for colored faux jackets and vests are really making a statement this season. I love suede moto jackets and leather jackets for fall. Leather jackets work really well for a day or night look. Last but not least look for scarves with texture. A really cool textured scarf will add interest to your look and bring the eye up to a lovely smile. Here is an example of an outfit layered with texture:
I hope these layering tips encouraged you to use colors, patterns and textures while layering this fall and winter! When cleaning out your closet, look for different pieces that you can layer and add interest to your outfits!
